The Lustrous Career of Dimitar Berbatov
When you talk about the most famous sports of Bulgaria, the first name that comes to mind is “football” and when there is a talk about football, how can one forget Dimitar Berbatov. 30 January 1981, is the birth date of this great footballer, it was the time when no one would ever have thought about the accomplishments which were to be done by him. He started his love for football supporting AC Milan. Following his idol Marco van Basten, he started his career at Pirin Blagoevgrad club.
When he was at the age of 18, he joined CSKA Sofia, where his father used to play. From 1998 till January 2001, Berbatov played for the CSKA Sofia and represented it in Bulgarian APFG. However, the first thing that helped him to make a name of his own was Bulgarian National Cup where he scored 14 goals in 27 games and carried the day.
In January 2001, he joined in Bayer Leverkusen where he spent most of his time playing football. At Bayer Leverkusen, the things were not as jovial as they supposed to be as Berbatov was only been able to hit as many as 16 goals in his first 67 games. That was surely below standard for this champion player. However, he did show some of the glimpse of his expertise in Champions League as he hit a goal against Liverpool and played an exceptional role in the matches against Lyon and Real Madrid. In 2003-04 he hit 16 goals in 24 games and that really helped him to carve his place as forward. When he hit 46 goals in Champions League 2004-05, it was the time when world started to notice this new star and he joined Tottenham Hotspur from English Premier League.
At Tottenham Hotspur he started the new era of quality football and recognition and rated as the most expensive Bulgarian player ever. However, he proved that he was worth all the money when he hit 2 goals in 2 minutes in a friendly match against Birmingham City. He also received two man-of-the-match awards in group stages of UEFA Cup. He shared the Player of the month award for FA cup with Robbie Keane. In 2006–07, player of the season award was claimed by him. He also has Spurs Premier League hat-trick under his belt. His latest wins are against Chelsea at 24 February 2008 in Carling Cup and a 4-0 victory against West Ham United.
As a whole, it can be said that capaitain of Bulgarian National Team, Dimitar Berbatov will certainly go down as a legend in the sports history of Bulgaria.
This year (2008) Berbatov has given up his shirt at tottenham hotspur and made his way up the ranks in the premier league, it was confrimed over the summer that Dimitar had signed up to Manchester United for £30.7 million pounds.
